The practice of traditional architecture, if it is rigorous, is the most important possible contribution to the work of the craftsmen who still keep this knowledge alive today, the repository of the experience of countless generations on how to inhabit our environment in a lasting way and how to make rational use of the resources it can provide us with.
In order to contribute to the continuity of their work, among the four Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award winners, the jury selects and awards grants to master builders to train apprentices who can then learn the craft by working directly alongside them. The apprentices selected are those whose trade is deemed most in need or who are most appropriate for the long-term success of this initiative.
