MADDALONI

Présentation générale

Just a few steps away from the famous street of Nativity scenes, in a narrow alley in the heart of Naples’ historic centre, master craftsman Vincenzo Maddaloni was born.

From an early age, inspired by renowned eighteenth-century sculptors such as Giuseppe Sanmartino, Giuseppe Gori and Lorenzo Mosca, Master Maddaloni began his artistic journey, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his craft until it became his profession. As demand for his work continued to grow, he began looking for a collaborator to assist him in creating his pieces.

After a meticulous search, he turned his attention to a woman named Maria Ciaramella, who shared his passion for clay. Their artistic harmony brought them together not only as collaborators in the creation of their works but also as life partners. A few years later, they sealed their love in marriage.

His artistic dream came to fruition in 1950 with an ambitious project driven by his strong desire to showcase—and, above all, pass on—the art and tradition of the Neapolitan Nativity scene to an ever-wider audience. This led to the establishment of the renowned Maddaloni workshop, located on the famous Street of Nativity Scenes.

The Workshop Today

Today, the workshop is run by their daughter, Filomena, who continues to uphold the same standards passed down by her parents.

Inside, visitors can admire a wide variety of pastori (Nativity figurines), ranging from tiny figures known as moschelle, measuring just 3 centimetres in height, to larger figures measuring up to 30 centimetres. Each piece is entirely modelled and painted by hand and dressed in fine, prestigious fabrics.

The workshop also offers unique pieces meticulously crafted using traditional eighteenth-century techniques.

Visitors can discover characters from Neapolitan popular culture, including Pulcinella, Lo Scartellato (the hunchback), Totò, the De Filippo brothers and many others. The workshop also features Nativity scenes in a variety of sizes, alongside an extensive selection of accessories in different dimensions, allowing visitors to create any scene from a traditional Neapolitan Nativity.
