Luca Zerilli, luthier specialised in violins & bowed sting instruments

Luca Zerilli, a young craftsman from Friuli whose passion for music led him to emancipate himself from his IT education to devote himself entirely to the construction of bowed sting instruments of the violin family. After attending the ‘Bottega di Parma’ school of violin making with Professor Desiderio Quercetani, in 2019 he opened his workshop in Udine, a city located close to the Friulian Alps from where part of the wood he uses in the construction of his instruments comes from. Today, he has achieved international recognition as most of his business is conducted abroad, mainly in the United States, Europe and Korea.

During the interview, Luca Zerilli explained that the luthier does not necessarily need to know how to play the instrument, but he must be able to technically translate the requests of the musician customer. “The luthier and the musician are like the engineer and the pilot” .

Describing his working process, Luca told us about the choice of wood, which comes, in part, from local sawmills: spruce (from the Val Canale in Friuli) is used for the soundboard, maple, more veined, for the back, ribs and scroll, and ebony for the pegs, fingerboard and chinrest.

Once the wood has been provided, it must be planed and shaped, and in the case of the soundboard, the bowing is processed. “It is essential to work on the crowning of the soundboard, as the thickness distribution is what sculpts the sound of the violin…”. The thickness is measured with a feeler gauge and varies depending on the board or the back, from 2.5mm/2.8mm to 3mm/3.5mm. The wood has an ageing time of about 5 years before it can be used, so you have to anticipate depending on production.

Luca does a solitary job, for which technique and passion are needed. One could work exclusively with antique tools: the use of modern machinery, if not sanders, grinders and band saws to prepare the wood, is not essential.

His violins enhance the “natural beauty of the wood, giving the instrument a wonderful sound and timeless style”, representing a harmonious blend of music and craftsmanship.

Luca Zerilli, un giovane artigiano friulano la cui passione per la musica lo ha portato a emanciparsi dalla sua formazione informatica per dedicarsi completamente alla costruzione di strumenti ad arco della famiglia dei violini. Dopo aver frequentato la scuola di liuteria « Bottega di Parma » con il professor Desiderio Quercetani, nel 2019 ha aperto il suo laboratorio a Udine, una città situata a ridosso delle Alpi friulane da cui proviene parte del legno che utilizza nella costruzione dei suoi strumenti. Ad oggi, ha raggiunto un’influenza internazionale per le sue vendite: la maggior parte del suo lavoro è con l’estero, principalmente Stati Uniti, Europa e Corea. 

Durante l’intervista Luca Zerilli ha spiegato che al liutaio non occorre, per forza, saper suonare lo strumento ma, deve essere capace di tradurre tecnicamente le richieste del cliente musicista. ”Il liutaio e il musicista sono come l’ingegnere e il pilota” .

Descrivendo il suo processo lavorativo, Luca ci ha parlato della scelta del legno, che proviene, in parte, da segherie locali: l’abete rosso (di provenienza dalla Val Canale in Friuli) viene usato per la tavola armonica, l’acero, più marezzato, per il fondo, le fasce e il riccio e l’ebano per i piroli, la tastiera, la mentoniera. 

Una volta procurato il legno, esso viene piallato e sagomato e nel caso della tavola armonia viene lavorata la bombatura. “è fondamentale lavorare sulla bombatura della tavola armonica, poiché la distribuzione dello spessore è ciò che scolpisce il suono del violino…”. Lo spessore viene misurato con uno spessimetro e varia a seconda della tavola o del fondo, dai 2.5mm/2.8 mm ai 3mm/3.5mm. La legna ha un tempo di invecchiamento di  all’incirca 5 anni prima di poter essere usata, quindi bisogna anticipare in funzione della produzione.

Luca esegue un lavoro solitario, per il quale ci vuole tecnica e passione. Si potrebbe lavorare esclusivamente con attrezzi d’epoca: l’uso di macchinari moderni, se non levigatrici, smerigliatrici e seghe a nastro per preparare il legno, non è  indispensabile . 

I suoi violini esaltano la “bellezza naturale del legno, donando allo strumento un suono meraviglioso e uno stile senza tempo” rappresentando un’armoniosa sintonia tra musica e artigianato.
