In this edition, we focus on innovative ways to pass traditional craft skills to younger generations. With the sector evolving, smart technologies like e-learning and virtual reality are playing a key role. At CERFAV, these tools are being tested through the CRAEFT project, helping students engage with heritage crafts in modern ways. We also highlight the upcoming CRAFTOUR conference at the International Heritage Fair, where European projects unite to revitalize endangered crafts and promote skill transmission. Discover how innovation is shaping the future of craftsmanship across Europe!
FIRST CONFERENCE OF THE CRAFTOUR INITIATIVE
On October 24, the International Heritage Fair in Paris, will host the first CRAFTOUR conference, coordinated by Mad’in Europe and presenting a unique initiative in which 6 projects funded by the European Union are joining their efforts in a common project. CRAFTOUR unites the Horizon CRAEFT project with Track4Crafts, Haephestus, Culturality, Colours4Crafts and Mosaic bringing together 77 partners from over 20 countries.
CRAFTOUR aims to enhance the knowledge and transmission of craft skills, map and revitalize endangered crafts, and offer concrete recommendations for improving the European legal framework governing the sector.
With 300 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors from across Europe, this is a unique opportunity to spotlight the initiative and the future of craftsmanship.
THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN BUILT HERITAGE CRAFTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
A study conducted by Mad’in Europe and FRH reveals that traditional crafts, vital for preserving Europe’s built heritage, face significant challenges. The research highlights an ageing workforce, with 56% of craftspeople over 50, raising concerns about skill transmission. Despite 65% actively passing on their knowledge, many lack a succession plan, threatening future continuity. Sourcing quality materials and expanding customer bases, especially internationally, also present obstacles.
Furthermore, limited digital skills hinder business growth, though 90% see digital tools as beneficial. The study calls for improved education, certification, and digital training to secure the future of these crafts..
This study was presented on September the 20th in a video conference where experts of the sector such as Georgia Cristea, Panos Kostoulas, Rodolphe de Looz-Corswarem and Dominic Taylor were invite to share their point of view. If you missed the conference just watch it here!
CREATIVE CARIBBEAN JEWELRY AND CERAMICS IN SICILY
From 23 to 27 September 2024, as part of the Transcultura Programme, implemented by the UNESCO regional office in Havana, with funding from the European Union, and the collaboration of Mad’in Europe, nine young jewellery and ceramic designers from the Caribbean participated in an artistic exchange in Caltagirone, Sicily.
Three renowned European artisans taught their techniques including glass ‘lampworking’, painting on ceramics, enamelling, firing and 3D printing. The municipality of Caltagirone hosted a public exhibition of the works created by the young Caribbean artists and a conference in the presence of the authorities. We are glad to introduce you to the three professionals that participated in the initiative as teachers.
Desirèe Delfino, born in Palermo in 1991, grew up in a family of artists and in the heart of Caltagirone’s ceramic tradition. Her natural flair for color and design was shaped by her father’s work as a ceramics technician and teacher at the local arts school. In the family workshop, founded in 1984, Desirèe has made her mark, being the first in Caltagirone to introduce 3D printing in ceramics.
Founded in 1989 by Salvatore Gurreri, his shop thrives through the artistic collaboration of eight skilled young artisans, including Salvatore’s daughter Valentina. Each artisan brings years of training to uphold the millenary traditions of Caltagirone ceramics. Specializing in lava stone tables and wall coverings, Salvatores workshop combines decades of experience with innovative ideas
Francesca Bortolaso is a genuinely passionate glass artist who has been shaping her craft since she opened her studio in Verona in 1992.
