Irina Jibuti is a ceramic artist, researcher, and educator whose practice is grounded in an understanding of clay as a living material,its physical, visual, and cultural properties. Her work brings together research, practice, and teaching, positioning ceramics as a dynamic and continuously evolving field.

She holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Ceramics from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (2003–2010). Over the course of two decades, she has participated in numerous international exhibitions, symposiums, residencies, and collaborative projects, and is also a member of the Ceramic Foundation’s Clay Office network. Her multifaceted practice spans functional ceramics, sculptural objects, and installations.

Her research is focused on local clays and their potential. Working with natural materials, she investigates their behavior across different technological processes, seeking to connect traditional knowledge with contemporary experimentation. At the same time, her practice is deeply informed by many years of experience working with fire, including wood firing and raku.

From 2015 to 2025, she was the founder and director of Ceramic Studio 1300, one of the most recognized ceramic production studios in Tbilisi, Georgia. Through this work, she gained extensive experience in studio management, production, education, and the development of contemporary ceramic culture in the region.

Since 2018, she has been working with Art Residency “aqtushetii” in the high-mountain region of Tusheti, where she set up a ceramic studio and continues to lead international and local workshops. She has also built wood-firing kilns in two different regions of Georgia, expanding opportunities for experimental and traditional firing practices.

Alongside her studio and research practice, Irina has developed educational programs in different regions of Georgia, working with local communities, students, and artists. Since 2009, she has also been leading inclusive ceramic workshops for people with special needs and disabilities.

An important part of her practice is the sharing of knowledge and the rediscovery of resources that already exist within local environments, yet often remain overlooked.

Her newest initiative, Commonland Project, was created in response to her long-term observations of what contemporary Georgian ceramics needs today: a space for artistic practice, exchange, research, education, and new opportunities for growth.

Irina Jibuti est une artiste céramiste, chercheuse et enseignante dont la pratique s’appuie sur une compréhension de l’argile comme matériau vivant, de ses propriétés physiques, visuelles et culturelles. Son travail conjugue recherche, pratique et enseignement, positionnant la céramique comme un domaine dynamique et en constante évolution.

Elle est titulaire d’une licence et d’un master en céramique de l’Académie des arts de Tbilissi (2003-2010). Pendant plus de vingt ans, elle a participé à de nombreuses expositions, colloques, résidences et projets collaboratifs internationaux, et est membre du réseau Clay Office de la Fondation de la céramique. Sa pratique pluridisciplinaire englobe la céramique utilitaire, les objets sculpturaux et les installations.

Ses recherches portent sur les argiles locales et leur potentiel. Travaillant avec des matériaux naturels, elle étudie leur comportement à travers différents procédés technologiques, cherchant à relier les savoirs traditionnels à l’expérimentation contemporaine. Parallèlement, sa pratique est profondément influencée par une longue expérience du travail du feu, notamment la cuisson au bois et le raku.

De 2015 à 2025, elle a fondé et dirigé Ceramic Studio 1300, l’un des ateliers de production céramique les plus réputés de Tbilissi, en Géorgie. Cette expérience lui a permis d’acquérir une expertise approfondie en gestion d’atelier, production, enseignement et développement de la culture céramique contemporaine dans la région.

Depuis 2018, elle travaille avec la résidence d’artistes « aqtushetii » dans la région montagneuse de Touchétie, où elle a créé un atelier de céramique et continue d’animer des ateliers internationaux et locaux. Elle a également construit des fours à bois dans deux régions de Géorgie, offrant ainsi de nouvelles possibilités pour les techniques de cuisson expérimentales et traditionnelles.

Parallèlement à son travail en atelier et à ses recherches, Irina a développé des programmes éducatifs dans différentes régions de Géorgie, en collaboration avec les communautés locales, les étudiants et les artistes.
