I am a designer-maker using glass as the main medium to materialise my thoughts, focussing on projects where I am able to express myself freely, bound only by the limitations of the space and location. My work is divided between making pieces to be sold through galleries or exhibitions where I have the freedom to develop my own concepts without constraints and pieces that are made to commission – private and public – against specific client requirements. Each of my glass installations is unique and is informed by, amongst other things, the ethos of the place, the budget, the location, function Page 4 of 5 and aspect of the building together with input from those who will use the space. I work from my own studio and workshop in Somerset. The fundamental techniques involved in my work are unchanged from those that have been employed for centuries associated with producing classical stained glass windows. These include acid-etching, sandblasting, painting and staining. My current practice, however, has embraced many technological advances in modern materials and manufacturing processes, including the use of high-performance silicones for laminating glass that were originally developed for space and solar panel applications. I also employ techniques such as laser engraving and waterjet cutting to interpret my designs.
