This workshop offers an introduction to the use of digital cutting machines in bookbinding and explores how these tools can push the boundaries of book design.
Thanks to digital tools, it is now possible to refine decorative and structural elements of a book with great precision. While fine details can still be cut by hand, reproducing them at scale becomes time-consuming. A digital cutter improves both efficiency and consistency—especially when working with complex structures or intricate patterns.
Modern desktop cutting machines are becoming increasingly accessible, with A4-format models available from around €200 to €300. These machines can cut a variety of materials including paper, vinyl, leather, and light cardboard, and some advanced models even offer foil stamping and engraving features.
To ensure that the skills and files remain accessible and adaptable, the workshop also covers how to prepare cutting templates using open-source software, particularly Inkscape.
Whether you’re a book artist, designer, or curious maker, this hands-on session will give you the tools to blend traditional craft with digital precision.
