Workshop of White Carpentry

TEACHER: Ángel María Martín. Carpenter specializing in traditional white carpentry, he holds a Higher Technician degree in Applied Plastic Arts and Design to Sculpture. He has extensive professional experience in the restoration and construction of latticework structures, overseeing the restoration of coffered ceilings and the construction of new roofs in religious and civil buildings in Ávila, Salamanca, and Granada. Since 2014, Ángel has been responsible for launching and directing the “Narros del Castillo White Carpentry School” at the Mudejar Carpentry Center of La Moraña (CICMA), where he provides training and conducts outreach activities on white carpentry.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

To deepen theoretical and practical aspects of the design and execution of latticework roof structures with 5 and 7 panels.

CONTENTS:

Theoretical aspects:

  • Layout of samples of 5-panel square latticework.
  • Layout of 5-panel octagonal latticework.
  • Calculation and derivation of the framing squares corresponding to the given sample.
  • Determination of “plumb lines.”
  • Drafting of the necessary “wood note” for its construction.
  • Sample and layout of 7-panel square latticework.

Theoretical/practical aspects:

  • Design and layout of the lattice in the structure as a basis for the distribution and sizing of its elements.
  • Layout of joints, cuts, and tenons using framing squares.
  • Drawing of the integrated lattice sample in the profile of a 7-panel square roof structure.
  • Drawing of the profile of a 7-panel roof structure (profile of the section of the structure and profile of the set of rafters).

Specific craft techniques:

  • Representation and orthogonal projection of the lattice structure.
  • Preparation of workshop plans.
  • Layout and execution of cuts and joints involved in the construction of the lattice structure.
  • Construction and assembly of the elements of a 5-panel lattice structure.
  • Assessment and layout of the room.
  • Sketches, data collection, and measurements.
  • Choice of the lattice motif in the ceiling and eaves.
  • Layout of the set of framing squares of the lattice structure.
  • Determination of the thickness of the rafters based on the design of the lattice and the span to be covered.
  • Sizing of rafters, knuckles, rafters, and rafters.
  • *THE CEILING: Making the knuckles of the ceiling, their peinazos, and tenons for installing the lattice.
  • *THE EAVES: Layout of rafters, rafters, and rafters of the panels and girders. Making tenons in rafters.
  • *ASSEMBLING THE FRAME: Assembly, fixing, and mounting of the lattice structure.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

Basic knowledge of geometric drawing and use of manual workshop tools is advisable.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
