Zaza Gatenashvili

Zaza Gatenashvili was born in Akhalgori. Following the August 2008 war, he was forced to leave his home and, as an internally displaced person, settled in the Tserovani IDP settlement. Despite the hardships, he continued his professional work and established the workshop-museum “Georgian Ornament”, which has become an important center for the preservation of traditional woodcraft, the promotion of Georgian ornamental art, and vocational education.

Zaza Gatenashvili is a master of artistic woodcraft with more than thirty years of professional experience. He began working with wood at the age of twelve, learning the craft from his father, who devoted his life to wood carving and the study of traditional Georgian ornaments. The knowledge and passion he inherited from his father shaped his artistic path and continue to inspire his work today. Zaza often says that his father remains the first person to evaluate his creations and that he still learns from him.

To deepen his professional knowledge, he continued his studies at the Academy of Arts. After graduating, he taught children with disabilities at one of the schools in Tbilisi for several years. He remembers this period with great warmth, believing that teaching was a mutual learning experience. While sharing his knowledge with his students, he also gained valuable insights and inspiration from them.

After the August War, despite being forced to leave his home, Zaza never abandoned his profession. In Tserovani, he established a workshop-museum where he continues to create wooden artworks and teach the craft to people of different ages. Over the years, nearly 50 craftsmen have received training in woodcraft under his guidance, making education one of the most significant aspects of his professional legacy.

The name of his workshop, “Georgian Ornament,” reflects the artistic values at the heart of his work. Most of Zaza’s creations are inspired by traditional Georgian ornaments and decorative motifs that have been an integral part of the country’s cultural heritage for centuries. By incorporating these historic patterns into contemporary wooden objects, he preserves traditional craftsmanship while giving it a modern artistic expression.

His collection includes handcrafted traditional furniture, decorative wooden boxes, household and kitchen items, souvenirs, interior decorative pieces, and a wide range of applied art objects. Every piece is handmade and distinguished by its craftsmanship, careful attention to detail, respect for natural materials, and creative interpretation of traditional Georgian ornamental designs.

For Zaza Gatenashvili, woodworking is far more than a profession; it is a way of preserving the knowledge inherited from previous generations and passing it on to the future. His greatest ambition is to inspire young people to appreciate traditional craftsmanship, share his experience with aspiring artisans, and ensure that the centuries-old tradition of Georgian artistic woodworking continues to thrive.

Zaza Gatenashvili nació en Akhalgori. Tras la guerra de agosto de 2008, se vio obligado a abandonar su hogar y, como persona desplazada internamente, se estableció en el asentamiento de Tserovani. A pesar de las dificultades, continuó desarrollando su actividad profesional y fundó el taller-museo «Georgian Ornament», que se ha convertido en un importante centro para la preservación de la artesanía tradicional de la madera, la promoción del arte ornamental georgiano y la formación profesional.

Zaza Gatenashvili es un maestro artesano especializado en el trabajo artístico de la madera con más de treinta años de experiencia profesional. Comenzó a trabajar la madera a los doce años, aprendiendo el oficio de su padre, quien dedicó su vida a la talla en madera y al estudio de los ornamentos tradicionales georgianos. Los conocimientos y la pasión que heredó de él marcaron profundamente su trayectoria artística y continúan inspirando su trabajo. Zaza suele decir que su padre sigue siendo la primera persona en valorar cada una de sus creaciones y que todavía continúa aprendiendo de él.

Para ampliar sus conocimientos profesionales, continuó sus estudios en la Academia de Bellas Artes. Tras graduarse, trabajó durante varios años enseñando a niños con discapacidad en una escuela de Tiflis. Recuerda aquella etapa con especial cariño, convencido de que la enseñanza es un proceso de aprendizaje mutuo. Mientras compartía sus conocimientos con sus alumnos, también recibió de ellos una gran inspiración y valiosas enseñanzas.

Después de la guerra de agosto de 2008, aunque se vio obligado a abandonar su hogar, Zaza nunca renunció a su profesión. En Tserovani fundó un taller-museo donde continúa creando obras en madera y enseñando el oficio a personas de todas las edades. A lo largo de los años, cerca de cincuenta artesanos se han formado en el trabajo de la madera bajo su dirección, convirtiendo la transmisión de conocimientos en uno de los aspectos más importantes de su legado profesional.

El nombre de su taller, «Georgian Ornament», refleja los valores artísticos que se encuentran en el corazón de su trabajo. La mayoría de sus creaciones están inspiradas en los ornamentos y motivos decorativos tradicionales georgianos, que forman parte del patrimonio cultural del país desde hace siglos. Al incorporar estos diseños históricos en objetos contemporáneos de madera, preserva la artesanía tradicional al tiempo que le aporta una expresión artística actual.

Su colección incluye muebles tradicionales hechos a mano, cajas decorativas de madera, utensilios para el hogar y la cocina, recuerdos, elementos de decoración de interiores y una amplia variedad de objetos de artes aplicadas. Cada pieza está elaborada completamente a mano y se distingue por la calidad de su ejecución, la atención al detalle, el respeto por los materiales naturales y una interpretación creativa de los ornamentos tradicionales georgianos.

Para Zaza Gatenashvili, el trabajo de la madera es mucho más que una profesión: es una forma de preservar los conocimientos heredados de las generaciones anteriores y transmitirlos a las futuras. Su mayor deseo es inspirar a los jóvenes a descubrir el valor de la artesanía tradicional, compartir su experiencia con los futuros artesanos y contribuir a que la centenaria tradición georgiana de la talla artística en madera siga viva.

ზაზა გათენაშვილი წარმოშობით ახალგორიდანაა. 2008 წლის აგვისტოს ომის შემდეგ, როგორც იძულებით გადაადგილებულმა პირმა, ცხოვრება წეროვნის დევნილთა დასახლებაში განაგრძო. მიუხედავად მძიმე გამოწვევებისა, მან საკუთარი საქმიანობა არ შეწყვიტა და წეროვანში დააარსა სახელოსნო-მუზეუმი „ქართული ორნამენტი“, რომელიც დღეს ტრადიციული ხის მხატვრული დამუშავების, ქართული ორნამენტული ხელოვნების პოპულარიზაციისა და პროფესიული განათლების მნიშვნელოვანი სივრცეა.

ზაზა გათენაშვილი ხის მხატვრული დამუშავების ოსტატია, რომელსაც ამ სფეროში 30 წელზე მეტი გამოცდილება აქვს. ხეზე მუშაობა 12 წლის ასაკში დაიწყო. ხელობის სიყვარული და პირველი ცოდნა მამისგან მიიღო, რომელმაც მთელი ცხოვრება ხეზე კვეთასა და ქართული ტრადიციული ორნამენტების შესწავლას მიუძღვნა. სწორედ მამისგან ნასწავლმა ცოდნამ განსაზღვრა ზაზას შემოქმედებითი გზა და დღემდე მისი მთავარი შთაგონების წყაროდ რჩება. თავად ამბობს, რომ მამა დღემდე მისი ნამუშევრების პირველი შემფასებელია და მისგან სწავლა არასოდეს შეუწყვეტია.

პროფესიული ცოდნის გასაღრმავებლად სწავლა სამხატვრო აკადემიაში გააგრძელა. აკადემიის დასრულების შემდეგ რამდენიმე წლის განმავლობაში თბილისის ერთ-ერთ სკოლაში შეზღუდული შესაძლებლობის მქონე ბავშვებს ასწავლიდა. ეს პერიოდი განსაკუთრებული სითბოთი ახსენდება, რადგან მიაჩნია, რომ სწავლების პროცესი ორმხრივი გამოცდილებაა – ის არა მხოლოდ ცოდნას გადასცემდა, არამედ თავადაც მუდმივად სწავლობდა, ახალ გამოცდილებას იძენდა და ბავშვებისგან არანაკლებ მნიშვნელოვან გაკვეთილებს იღებდა.

აგვისტოს ომის შემდეგ, მშობლიური სახლის დატოვების მიუხედავად, საქმიანობა არ შეუწყვეტია. წეროვანში შექმნა სახელოსნო-მუზეუმი, სადაც დღესაც ქმნის ნამუშევრებს და ხის დამუშავების ხელოვნებას სხვადასხვა ასაკის მსურველებს ასწავლის. წლების განმავლობაში მასთან ხეზე მუშაობის საფუძვლები დაახლოებით 50-მდე ოსტატმა შეისწავლა, რაც მისი საქმიანობის ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე მნიშვნელოვანი მიღწევაა.

მისი სახელოსნო „ქართული ორნამენტი“ სწორედ იმ ღირებულებას ასახავს, რომელსაც ოსტატი განსაკუთრებულ მნიშვნელობას ანიჭებს. ზაზა გათენაშვილის ნამუშევრების უმეტესობა ქართული ტრადიციული ორნამენტებითა და დეკორატიული მოტივებით არის შთაგონებული. იგი საუკუნოვანი ქართული ორნამენტული მემკვიდრეობის ელემენტებს თანამედროვე ხის ნაკეთობებში აცოცხლებს, რითაც ტრადიციულ ხელოვნებას ახალ სიცოცხლეს სძენს და მის უწყვეტ განვითარებას უწყობს ხელს.

ოსტატი ქმნის ტრადიციულ ხელნაკეთ ავეჯს, ხის დეკორატიულ ყუთებს, სამზარეულოსა და საყოფაცხოვრებო ნივთებს, სუვენირებს, ინტერიერის დეკორატიულ ელემენტებსა და გამოყენებითი ხელოვნების მრავალფეროვან ნიმუშებს. თითოეული ნამუშევარი ხელით მზადდება და გამოირჩევა მაღალი ხარისხით, ბუნებრივი მასალისადმი პატივისცემითა და ქართული ორნამენტული ტრადიციების თანამედროვე ინტერპრეტაციით.

ზაზა გათენაშვილისთვის ხეზე მუშაობა მხოლოდ პროფესია არ არის – ეს არის წინაპრებისგან მიღებული ცოდნის გაგრძელება, ქართული კულტურული მემკვიდრეობის დაცვა და მომავალი თაობებისთვის გადაცემა. მისი მთავარი მიზანია ახალგაზრდებში გააღვივოს ინტერესი ტრადიციული ხელობის მიმართ, საკუთარი გამოცდილება მომავალ ოსტატებს გაუზიაროს და ქართული ხის მხატვრული დამუშავების მრავალსაუკუნოვანი ტრადიცია მომავალშიც ცოცხალი და განვითარებადი დარჩეს.
