Kronmakaren Britten Toftarp

General presentation

I call myself a wire work artist and I want to, with the Crown as my object, explore and break with the traditional wire work. Both in objects and in technology as well as design languages. I want to shift from the utility to an increasingly narrative object.

The work often begins as a kind of “wire doodles”. Loose parts and shapes temporarily joined. Will the wire come alive? What story does it hold? In recent years, I have searched inland Halland County in Sweden in an attempt to interpret the typical folk art painting in a collection of bridal crowns and hair jewelry for weddings and festities. I am in love with these painted colorful, naivistic “tapestry” that adorned cottages and farms for parties and holidays in the country of Halland back in the days. Often, the religious motives and bridal crowns were present in the paintings. Almost always as a sign of virginity, rank and wealth.

As an artist I am autodidact with some classes by silver smiths, now living in Morup, County of Halland at the westcoast in the south of Sweden were I have a studio. Born and raised in Örebro were I did a Masters in Sociology at the Universe.
