LE PÔLE DE LA PIERRE

General presentation

The Pôle da Pierre Center, one of the two facilities of the Walloon Heritage Agency (AWaP), stands out for its core mission of transmitting and disseminating knowledge, skills, and techniques related to construction, garden art, funerary heritage, and artistic trades. Nestled in the heart of the Wincqz Grand Quarry, a former blue stone quarry dating back to the mid-19th century in Soignies, the site bears witness to a rich history, having housed Grégoire Wincqz’s company before being rehabilitated in 2016-17 to host the Training Center.

Operational since spring 2020, the Pôle da Pierre offers a variety of courses throughout the year, whether short-term (less than a week) or extending over several months. The focus is on stone-related trades, and the site provides a conducive environment for learning and practicing specific skills in these fields.

Within the new workshops of the Pôle da Pierre, two lithotheques have been set up on the gables, constituting collections of Walloon stones. These didactic spaces allow trainees and visitors to explore on-site a detailed catalog of different ornamental rocks and their finishes. This immersive pedagogical approach reinforces learning by providing a concrete and tangible experience.

The heritage of Wallonia is at the forefront of the concerns of the AWaP, which since 2018 oversees the management of immovable cultural heritage. A common legacy implies collective responsibility. In addition to the classic missions of excavation, protection, and restoration, the AWaP, through the Pôle da Pierre, also engages in two other crucial missions: training and raising awareness among a diverse audience. By training heritage actors, the Center contributes to ensuring the sustainability of this exceptional legacy in a built and natural environment of quality.
