The 40-Week Boat Building Course provides training for both those pursuing a professional career in the industry and those learning for the joy of boat building. Since 1997, over 650 people have completed the program, which includes the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Boatbuilding (Advanced) but extends far beyond with intensive practical instruction.
The course is divided into two parts:
- First half: Students develop essential boat building skills such as joinery, lofting, construction, and restoration.
- Second half: Participants build boats from start to finish using both traditional and modern methods.
For 40 weeks, students train full-time in a highly practical workshop environment, gaining expertise in woodworking, sail making, marine systems, finishing, and more. The course includes hands-on experience at a marine engineering company and culminates in the launch of the student-built boats in Lyme Regis Harbour.
There are two intakes per year:
- February 17 – December 10, 2025
- September 1, 2025 – June 26, 2026
Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
