The Atelier du Bois Doré specializes in restoration of old gilding and interior and exterior decorative gilding.
The courses focus on conservation-restoration of gilded wood and aim at first acquiring control of the different stages and techniques of gilding with golden leaf and the “detrempe”; Being able to identify the supports, products and problems, so as to approach restoration knowingly, by making the right ethical, technical and aesthetic choices.
Training is based on personal practice, with theoretical support and individual assistance.
Details of the workshop
The workshops are organized in French, with the possibility of punctual translation/assistance in Dutch or English.
- Module 1 (initiation, approximately 8 – 10 days) is an initiation to gilding, and is a prerequisite required for module 2 (except equivalent training elsewhere)

A reference syllabus is provided as work and the subjects covered (equipment, techniques, products, practical steps, tips and tips, addresses, bibliography, etc.), and many books can be viewed in the workshop (decorative gilding , art gilding, catering, history of the frame or the mirror, catalogs of public sales, historical works, …).
- Number attending: groups of 6 to 8 people
- Skills acquired at the end of the training: being able to restore your own gilded wood heritage, or brown your own creations, in the rules of the art.
- Admission conditions: No conditions, except the gesture, the heart and the mind: patience, the taste for restoration, beautiful and precision
- Equipment to be provided by the trainee:
During module 1 (initiation), the golden wood workshop provides everything: parts, tools, materials, etc. –
By approaching modules 2 (restoration), especially in a long-term perspective, it is asked to gradually equip yourself with a few basic gilding tools (cushion, knife, palette, brushes, agate …).
Other tools (cabinetmaking, special tools) as well as generic products and materials (glues, chalks, clays, etc.) or very specific remain provided by the workshop. On the other hand, leaf notebooks (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) as well as large quantities of molding products are your responsibility (the workshop can provide you).
