From food to clothing, we are witnessing a rejection of industrial products in favor of short supply chains and natural alternatives. This revolution, driven by consumers, is also affecting architecture, where vernacular solutions are becoming increasingly popular.
But what is vernacular architecture? “Architecture without architects” for some, architecture made of bio-sourced materials for others, or traditional architecture for still others — vernacular architecture defies any single definition. Yet, it embodies a break with a certain modernity, as well as a deep desire for rootedness, quality, and meaning.
By organizing a major exhibition on contemporary vernacular architecture, along with an opening debate, the city of Tournai aims to contribute to the rediscovery of this architecture of the past — one that could, sooner than we think, become a solution for the future.
