David Lainé is Senior Partner Painting Conservation & Research

(°B, 1971) First trained in chemistry, David graduated with a higher education diploma in Conservation of Paintings from the Hogere Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Anderlecht (Brussels). He went on to further studies in microscopic cross sections and pigment analysis at the University of London (International Academic Project). He heads the research and technical art analysis department at IPARC and is heavily involved in the R&D for ICM.

He publishes regularly and is in demand as a speaker on panel restoration and technical art analysis. He opened a one-man business as a freelance conservator in 1996. Laine bvba was established in late 2008; at the end of 2011 it became IPARC Ltd (International Platform for Art Research and Conservation).

David Lainé was a member of the international scientific committee established when the exhibition centering around the 16th century painter Michiel Coxcie featured in the Museum M in Leuven in 2013. He was also a member of the scientific council “Flemish Masters in Situ (2017-2019). At present David Lainé is vice-president of the Belgian Professional Association of Conservators of Art (BRK-APROA).

IPARC-an acronym for International Platform for Art Research and Conservation-represents a versatile, multi-disciplinary conservation and restoration platform offering specialized and highly professional services in the conservation and restoration. With a team of qualified restorers, who each represent a speciality, we are working on old and modern masters, modern materials, contemporary art, wood, polychromy, stone and paper.

Workshop & laboratory

IPARC has its headquarters in a business premises on the outskirts of Brussels, situated very close to the national (cargo) airport and at the junction of the main approach roads; it is easily reached by public transport. This ensures that the journey from home to work is a convenient one for both staff and trainees.

When fitting out the workshop (ca 700 m²) we heavily invested in security, fire detection technology, organization and adequate adaption of the climate requirements of the work zone of each individual specialism.

Potentially damaging, dust-proof/dusty, and noisy activities are isolated from each other; the laboratory, moreover, is located in a separate zone, so that all analyses can take place together, with direct access to digitalisation via camera or computer. The workshop is fully equipped, so that several objects can be treated in parallel, and has a wide range of technical equipment, easels and treatment tables, including a hot vacuum table. In setting it up, particular attention was paid to the organisation of the materials and the inventorying of materials and objects.

Extraction is provided at a number of points where vapours and odours may be released in the course of treatment.

IPARC’s qualified and certified conservators work in different teams based on the topology of art objects i.e. old master paintings, modern and contemporary art, wood, stone, textile, polychromic objects and metals. Art storage

Taking care of your collection is our core business/main objective!

The storage facility ARTPORT is a climate- controlled depot for works of art and heritage objects. ARTPORT is located in Kampenhout, a short 20 mins drive from Brussels-Zaventem airport, 30 mins from Antwerpen and 15 mins from Leuven. Artport houses a 700 m² workshop, laboratories and studio and offers extended (2000 m²) storage facilities for clients. Fitting out the depot we fully complied with the RE-ORG principles (ICCROM).

The storage can be short term or long term and is also suitable for emergency storage. Both groupage and individual boxes are an option as are specific zones. Separate entrance is possible depending on availability. The storage facility has been operational since 2016 and is fitted out with security surveillance, climate control and a fire detection system – all in accordance with the latest guidelines.

IPARC offers all these services in one location. Collection services and storage facilities are under the same roof and as such make up for an integrated approach. Any manipulation and all handling of works of art are done by certified conservators only.

ICM – IPARC INTEGRATED CONTAMINATION MANAGEMENT – Ecological solutions to decontaminate art objects
In museums and collections worldwide, there are two related and interlinked problems threatening art works and heritage objects for which ICM and IPARC are offering ecological solutions: infestation by insects and biocides residues. Insects can damage objects made of organic material to a point of complete destruction if undetected or if no action is taken. Most of biocides are now forbidden in Europe but for years substances such as Arsenic, Mercury, Naphthalene, PCP, DDT, Lindane have been widely used to fight insect and fungi attacks. Tens of millions of objects are contaminated and expose people who are in contact with them to severe illness.
